What Makes Búng Bình Thiên Lake Special
Bưng Bình Thiên is a natural freshwater lake in An Phú district, the northernmost district of An Giang province, on the Cambodian border. Known locally as the 'holy lake', it is a permanent water body that expands dramatically during the Mekong's annual flood season - swelling from a modest lake to a wide expanse of water that submerges the surrounding lowland and fills with lotus plants. The lotus bloom during the August-September peak of the flood season is the defining experience of the site: dense pink flowers cover the water surface as far as the eye can see, broken by channels navigated by flat-bottomed boats. The surrounding district is home to a significant Cham Muslim community - one of the ethnic groups descended from the Champa kingdom whose presence in the Mekong Delta reflects centuries of migration from central Vietnam.

How to Get There
🚗 Getting There
Bưng Bình Thiên is located in Khánh Bình commune, An Phú district, approximately 35km north of Châu Đốc city. By motorbike from Châu Đốc, follow the road north along the Mekong toward the Cambodian border - the lake is signposted from the main road and the journey takes about 45 minutes. The border road passes through a series of Cham villages before reaching the lake. Small wooden boats are available for hire at the lake edge. The area is also accessible as part of organised day tours from Châu Đốc.
What to Expect
👀 On the Ground
At peak flood season the lake is a wide expanse of lotus-covered water with no visible far shore from the boat. The boatman pushes through lotus stems with a pole, opening a path through the flowers. The sound is the rustle of lotus leaves and the calls of waterbirds in the reeds. In the morning light the pink flowers against the green pads and the reflections in the water between them create straightforward photography. The surrounding Cham villages are visible from the lake edge - minarets and houses on stilts characterise the shoreline. The overall atmosphere is quieter and less developed than Trà Sư cajuput forest further south.
Travel Tips
🧳 Tips
Bưng Bình Thiên is a seasonal destination - the lotus and the expanded lake are the reason to visit, and both depend on the Mekong flood. Visiting outside the Jul-Nov window gives a diminished experience: less water, fewer flowers, and the lake contracted to a fraction of its flood-season size. The An Phú border district is the most culturally distinctive area of An Giang province - the Cham communities here have maintained their Muslim identity, language, and boat-based lifestyle across centuries of changing political geography. Combine the lake with time in the villages rather than treating it as a pure photography stop.
