What Makes Bùi Hui Grassland Special
Bùi Hui Grassland sits at over 700 metres above sea level in Ba Tơ district, Quảng Ngãi province, a highland meadow of rolling hills covered in grass and sim shrubs - the rhodomyrtus plant whose purple berries and flowers define the landscape through the spring months. The grassland covers tens of hectares in the mountains of western Quảng Ngãi, a region populated by the H're ethnic minority whose community in Ba Tơ district maintains traditional practices including the chiêng ba bronze gong performance, recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage. The elevation gives Bùi Hui a climate distinct from the coastal lowlands below - cool nights year-round and frequent morning mist that lends the landscape an atmospheric quality that has drawn camping groups and photographers in increasing numbers. The sim blossom in late March and April, when the meadow turns purple across its full extent, is the event that has brought the grassland to wider attention.

How to Get There
🚗 Getting There
Bùi Hui Grassland is located in Ba Trang commune, Ba Tơ district, approximately 60km southwest of Quảng Ngãi city. By motorbike from Quảng Ngãi, follow the road west to Ba Tơ district centre - the journey takes about 1 hour. From Ba Tơ town, continue approximately 10km further along a winding mountain road to the grassland - add another 30-40 minutes. The road is navigable by motorbike but requires a machine with adequate power for the inclines. There is no regular public transport beyond Ba Tơ town; motorbike is the standard approach for the final section.
What to Expect
👀 On the Ground
The grassland opens from the treeline as the road reaches the upper elevation - wide rolling hills of green grass and sim shrubs extending to the horizon. The landscape is open and the sky feels large after the forested road. In the sim flowering season the purple coverage across the hills is vivid and photogenic from multiple angles. The air at 700m is noticeably cooler than the coast, even in the dry season. H're community members are present in the area - visitors who spend time here can encounter traditional food including grilled buffalo and mountain greens, and observe the local lifestyle of a highland minority group that sees minimal tourist traffic.
Travel Tips
🧳 Tips
Bùi Hui is best experienced overnight - the camping atmosphere on the grassland, the cool night air, and the dawn light on the hills are what distinguish it from a day trip viewpoint. The sim blossom season (late March to April) is the obvious time to visit if the visual spectacle is the priority. Outside that window the grassland is pleasant but less dramatic - the green hills and highland climate are appealing year-round, but the purple bloom is the specific experience that has made Bùi Hui known. For travellers passing through central Vietnam between Đà Nẵng and Quy Nhơn, Ba Tơ district represents one of the least-visited highland areas along the coastal route.
