Đình làng An Hải

Đình làng An Hải is one of Lý Sơn's two historic village communal houses, serving as a memorial to the Hải Đội Hoàng Sa - the imperial navy conscripts from Lý Sơn who for over two centuries sailed annually to assert Vietnamese sovereignty over the Hoàng Sa (Paracel) Islands, knowing many would not return.

What Makes Đình làng An Hải Special

Đình làng An Hải is the communal house of An Hải village - one of the two original settlements on Lý Sơn - and serves as both a traditional village cultural center and a memorial to one of the most significant and least-known chapters in Vietnamese history. For over two centuries under the Nguyễn lords and later emperors, young men from Lý Sơn were conscripted into the Hải Đội Hoàng Sa - naval units sent each year to the Hoàng Sa (Paracel) Islands to assert sovereignty, collect tribute, and salvage shipwrecks. The crossings were dangerous and many sailors never returned. Before each departure, the men held farewell ceremonies at the communal houses of An Hải and An Vĩnh - ceremonies that continue today in the form of the annual Khao Lề Thế Lính Hoàng Sa memorial.

🚗 Getting There

Đình làng An Hải is in the An Hải area on the eastern side of Lý Sơn's main island. From the ferry port in An Vĩnh, follow the main road toward An Hải - the communal house is in the village center. By motorbike from the port, around 10-15 minutes.

👀 On the Ground

The communal house is a traditional Vietnamese đình structure - a large wooden hall with an elaborate roof, used for village ceremonies and as a space for honoring ancestors and deities. Inside are altars, historical documents, and artifacts related to the Hoàng Sa missions. The building is well-maintained and actively used. There are no formal visiting hours but the site is generally accessible during daytime.

🧳 Tips

The two communal houses (An Hải and An Vĩnh) and the Hải Đội Hoàng Sa museum form the historical core of Lý Sơn - together they tell a story of maritime sovereignty, sacrifice, and community that is unlike anything else in Vietnam. Allocate at least half a morning to understand the history before visiting the natural sites - it changes how the island feels.

The Khao Lề Thế Lính Hoàng Sa ceremony is held each year in late April - a memorial service for the sailors who died on Hoàng Sa expeditions; if your visit coincides with it, attendance is open and deeply moving
Ask locally about the communal house's collection of documents and artifacts related to the Hoàng Sa missions - some are on display, others require a guide to explain
Đình làng An Vĩnh is on the other side of the island - visit both to understand how the two founding villages each maintained their own relationship to the Hoàng Sa history
The communal house is an active cultural space, not a museum - local ceremonies and community events are still held here regularly
