What Makes Đình làng An Hải Special
Đình làng An Hải is the communal house of An Hải village - one of the two original settlements on Lý Sơn - and serves as both a traditional village cultural center and a memorial to one of the most significant and least-known chapters in Vietnamese history. For over two centuries under the Nguyễn lords and later emperors, young men from Lý Sơn were conscripted into the Hải Đội Hoàng Sa - naval units sent each year to the Hoàng Sa (Paracel) Islands to assert sovereignty, collect tribute, and salvage shipwrecks. The crossings were dangerous and many sailors never returned. Before each departure, the men held farewell ceremonies at the communal houses of An Hải and An Vĩnh - ceremonies that continue today in the form of the annual Khao Lề Thế Lính Hoàng Sa memorial.

The communal house is a traditional Vietnamese đình structure - a large wooden hall with an elaborate roof, used for village ceremonies and as a space for honoring ancestors and deities. Inside are altars, historical documents, and artifacts related to the Hoàng Sa missions. The building is well-maintained and actively used. There are no formal visiting hours but the site is generally accessible during daytime.
