What Makes Điệp Sơn Island Special
Điệp Sơn is a cluster of three small islands in Vạn Ninh district, northern Khánh Hòa, where a narrow sandbar emerges from the sea at low tide to connect the islands in a single walkable path. The sandbar - at its widest barely a few metres across, with the sea on both sides - has become one of Vietnam's most circulated travel images: a line of people walking across open water with turquoise sea on either side. The reality holds up in person. The islands sit in a sheltered bay with clear water and minimal development, reached by fishing boat from Vạn Giã port. The surrounding reef supports reasonable snorkeling and the island community maintains a small number of homestays for overnight visitors. Điệp Sơn sits outside the Nha Trang tourist circuit and sees a fraction of the visitor numbers that comparable island destinations in Khánh Hòa attract.

How to Get There
🚗 Getting There
Điệp Sơn is reached by boat from Vạn Giã fishing port in Vạn Ninh district, approximately 80km north of Nha Trang city. By motorbike from Nha Trang, follow Highway 1A north to Vạn Giã - the journey takes around 1.5 hours. Boats to Điệp Sơn depart from Vạn Giã pier and the crossing takes approximately 1 hour depending on sea conditions. Boats can be arranged at the pier or through guesthouses in Vạn Giã town. There is no fixed public ferry schedule - boats run when there are enough passengers or can be chartered privately. Check sea conditions before departing as the bay can be rough in bad weather.
What to Expect
👀 On the Ground
The boat arrives at the main island where a small fishing community and several homestays are located. From the pier, the sandbar path to the adjacent islands is visible at low tide - a pale strip of sand extending across the water. Walking the sandbar takes 10-15 minutes one way; the path is firm sand with the sea ankle to knee depth on both sides at the edges. The outer islands are uninhabited with small beaches and reef areas. Snorkeling around the island edges reveals coral and fish life in water that is clear enough to see the bottom in most conditions. The pace of the island is slow - there are no tour groups, no organised activities beyond the boat, and limited facilities.
Travel Tips
🧳 Tips
Điệp Sơn is most rewarding for visitors who stay overnight rather than attempting a same-day return from Nha Trang - the 80km distance and 1-hour boat crossing make a day trip logistically tight, and the island at dawn before day visitors arrive is a different experience to the midday hours. The sandbar is the centrepiece but the broader appeal of Điệp Sơn is its remoteness relative to the rest of Khánh Hòa's island destinations - no cable cars, no floating bars, no jet skis. For travellers moving along the coast between Hội An and Nha Trang, Vạn Ninh makes a logical overnight stop and Điệp Sơn justifies the detour from the main highway.
