What Makes Red Sand Dunes Special
The Red Sand Dunes sit 2km east of Mũi Né town centre, directly above the fishing village on the bay - the most accessible dune landscape in the area and the easiest to visit independently without a tour. The red colouration comes from iron oxide in the sand, the same mineral that gives the soil of Bình Thuận province its characteristic rust tone. The dunes are smaller than the White Sand Dunes at Bàu Trắng - rising perhaps 20–30 metres at their highest - but the colour is more vivid and the proximity to the fishing village below adds a human dimension that the more remote white dunes lack. At sunset, the low western light saturates the red-orange colour and the fishing boats in the bay catch the same warm tones - the combination of dune, village, and water in a single frame is the most characteristic image of Mũi Né.

How to Get There
🚗 Getting There
The Red Sand Dunes are 2km east of Mũi Né town centre on the road toward Phan Thiết - easily reached by motorbike (5 minutes), bicycle, or on foot in 20–25 minutes. The dune access point is on the inland side of the coast road, opposite the fishing village. There is no entrance fee and no formal gate - the dunes begin directly from the roadside. Most accommodation in Mũi Né can provide directions or arrange a xe ôm.
What to Expect
👀 On the Ground
The dune face rises steeply from the road, with a worn path leading to the main ridge. The ridge gives views in both directions - inland over scrub and the Bình Thuận plateau, and seaward over the fishing village and the bay. The sand surface is firm enough to walk on comfortably in dry season. Children with plastic sleds operate at the entrance and along the main slope - the slope is gentle enough for safe sliding. The dunes are small enough that the entire area can be explored in 20–30 minutes. At sunset, the ridge is a popular gathering point for both travellers and locals watching the light change on the water.
Travel Tips
🧳 Tips
The Red Sand Dunes are best treated as an easy late-afternoon activity rather than a destination in their own right - walk up for sunset, spend 30 minutes on the ridge, and combine with a stroll through the fishing village below. The White Sand Dunes at Bàu Trắng are the more dramatic dune experience; the Red Dunes are more convenient and require no planning or early wake-up. Most visitors to Mũi Né do both in the same day: Red Dunes at sunset one evening, White Dunes at sunrise the following morning.
