Overview
What Makes Phú Quý Island Special
Phú Quý is a coral island 120km off the coast of Bình Thuận province, administratively a district of its own in the East Sea. The island is approximately 16km² with a permanent population of around 30,000 people, predominantly engaged in offshore fishing. It sits on a raised coral platform that gives the surrounding water exceptional clarity - visibility of 15-20m is common in the dry season, making Phú Quý one of the better diving destinations in southern Vietnam. The island has been inhabited and fished for centuries and has a distinct island culture - different from the mainland Bình Thuận coast in the same way that long-isolated communities develop their own cadence. Tourism infrastructure is modest: basic guesthouses, a handful of restaurants, motorbike rentals, and a small number of dive operators. There is no resort development and the island retains a genuinely working character.

How to Get There
🚗 Getting There
Phú Quý is reached by high-speed ferry from Phan Thiết city. The crossing takes approximately 3 hours and ferries operate daily subject to sea conditions. Phan Thiết is 200km from Ho Chi Minh City - about 3.5 hours by car via the Dầu Giây junction and Highway 1A, or accessible by bus from HCMC. The ferry departs from Phan Thiết fishing port; check the current schedule as sailing times vary by season. Outside the January to August window, crossings can be cancelled due to rough seas - building a contingency day into the trip is prudent. The ferry is the only access; there is no airstrip on the island.
What to Expect
👀 On the Ground
The island has several beaches on its eastern and southern sides - Bãi Nhỏ and Bãi Triều are the most swimmable. The water clarity is excellent in the dry season. Snorkeling from the beach reveals coral and fish at relatively shallow depths. Organized dive trips go to outer reef sites with better coral coverage and deeper water. The island circuit by motorbike passes through the main town, fishing hamlets, the Linh Quang Pagoda (a significant regional temple), and a French-era lighthouse on the island's highest point with panoramic views. The island produces its own fish sauce, dried seafood, and sea vegetables - the local food at the guesthouses and small restaurants reflects the fishing community character.
Travel Tips
🧳 Tips
Phú Quý occupies a specific niche: it has the water clarity and diving quality of a remote offshore island without the resort infrastructure that has transformed Phú Quốc. The 3-hour crossing from Phan Thiết creates the right amount of friction to keep day-trippers away and maintain the island's character. A minimum 2-night stay is needed to do the island properly - one day for the beach and snorkeling circuit, one day for diving or a boat trip to the outer reefs. If mày is in Phan Thiết for the sand dunes and kitesurfing and has an extra 3 days, the island adds a completely different dimension to the Bình Thuận experience.
