Hưng Yên Province

Hưng Yên is a small Red River Delta province with an outsized place in Vietnamese history and cuisine. Once the thriving port of Phố Hiến - dubbed 'the second city after the capital' by 17th-century traders - it hosted Dutch, Chinese, and Japanese merchant quarters before the river silted up. Today the province is synonymous with nhãn lồng longan, considered the finest in Vietnam, and a remarkably intact ancient town that most foreign travelers never find.
